Scarsdale Grange specialises in Dementia, Nursing, Residential and Specialist Care. Our mission statement is to provide personal care to each of our residents in a safe, clean, comfortable and homely environment. People were encouraged to take part in a range of activities, both in the community and within the home. People and their relatives knew how they could complain if they needed to. Staff provided appropriate and coordinated care to people at the end of their lives by working closely with community health professionals.

A care home is a residential setting where a number of older people live, usually in single rooms or hotel-style suites, because they need regular or continuous access to care. Those run by private operators more often focus on lifestyle, with help and care services discretely available to buy if or when required. Housing-with-care is a recent but natural evolution of retirement housing to provide an environment capable of enabling older people to maintain their independence even if they become physically or mentally frail. – there are some services which we can’t rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider.

At the time of this inspection there were 50 people using the service. Some care homes are registered to provide personal care only, for example help with washing, dressing and giving medication. Others also provide nursing, and will have a nurse on duty twenty-four hours a day. They inspect care services to ensure they are supporting peoples wellbeing; appropriately setup; properly planning out care; are well led; and effectively staffed, each criteria is given a grade out of 6. We spoke with seven people who used the service and seven relatives about their experience of the care provided. We spoke with eight members of staff including the registered manager, a team leader, four care assistants, an activity coordinator and a cook.

This inspection was completed by two inspectors and an Expert by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. We frame our offer around ‘home’ because we understand its importance for everyone. But also because planning ahead may be needed to ensure that where you live now is ‘age proofed’, and that if you wish to consider moving, you have good information and advice to help you understand all your options.

There were enough staff available to keep people safe and meet their needs. People told us the home was always clean and we found they were protected from the spread of infection. We also have kitchens where residents can make their own drink or a snack, plus the larger communal area where everyone gets together for entertainment, activities or a chat. This all makes for a very sociable home, with much to enjoy and company or help when needed. The hunters believe there is a little girl who runs along the upstairs parlor and a little boy who plays downstairs, much to the chagrin of modern-day AGE employees. Although the home was originally founded by the UDC, due to primarily financial reasons, the home was turned over to the state of Texas in 1911. From 1911 through the 1940s, the home continued to serve women in Austin. Following World World II, however, the population steadily declined, and in 1963, the last three women were sent to private nursing homes and the State of Texas officially closed the doors. As a prime property for paranormal enthusiasts, this supernatural hotspot is full of phantoms.

By then, they had way more rocking chairs on the front porch than butts to fill them. My dad stole a bunch of them in order to get enough good parts to make 1 good rocking chair, which sat in the corner of my nursery and then the same for my siblings. The Confederate Women’s Home’s Last Years

Through dinners, events, concerts and individual donations, the Texas UDC purchased property and constructed a Richardson Romanesque revival style structure. In addition to several bedrooms and bathrooms, the home featured a parlor, dining area and a hospital. UDC chapters from all over the state donated furnishings for the home. Due to the cost to maintain the home, the UDC transferred the home to the state of Texas on Dec. 23, 1911.

Of the three documented burials in this plot, two were later moved to family plots elsewhere and one moved to rest beside her husband in Confederate Field in the Texas State Cemetery. This home provided for more than 3,400 indigent wives and widows of Confederate veterans and operated until 1963, when the last residents were transferred to private nursing homes. The Texas Confederate Home began as a project of the John B. Hood Camp of United Confederate Veterans, which obtained a charter from the state on November 28, 1884. The camp's main purpose was to establish a home for disabled and indigent Confederate veterans.

A free hour-long public tour, Murder, Mayhem & Misadventure, will be offered from 10 am to 4 pm. The tours feature costumed actors at grave sites and highlights the cemetery's "residents" who died untimely deaths from the 1860s to the 1910s. Today, the AGE of Central Texas offices are housed on Cedar Street, providing caregiving workshops and other free opportunities for the senior population in Travis County to grow and thrive as they age. Hood Camp deeded the property to the state on March 6, 1891. From 1938 to 1945, the population of the home fell from eighty-seven to fifty-five. In 1949 the home fell under the jurisdiction of the Board of Texas State Hospitals and Special Schools. During the late 1950s, the nine remaining residents were consolidated into one hospital wing. In 1963 the last three residents were moved to private nursing homes at state expense, and the facility was closed.

The Home consisted of a large administration building, a hospital, living quarters and private cottages; by all accounts it was a pleasant place to live out your final years. The private cottages were used by married couples for the most part. When a married veteran died, their wives were usually sent to the Confederate Woman’s Home in North Austin.

It’s a big task, and probably one that will never be fully completed. With many of the veterans, the only thing we have to document their lives and place them in history are their military service records and oftentimes those records are far from complete. The Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy cooperated in raising funds for the home. In 1886 the camp purchased sixteen acres of land at 1600 West Sixth Street in Austin from John B. In December of that year the UDC held a "Grand Gift Concert and Lottery," with prizes donated by the public, and raised over $10,800 to support the home.
